P2188: System Too Rich at Idle (Bank 1)

Severity: MediumDrive it? Yes, for nowTypical cost: $20–$6002 NHTSA complaints · 9 bulletinsPowertrain (generic, all makes)

Key takeaways

  • P2188 means the engine computer has had to pull too much fuel out of bank 1 at idle and has hit its limit.
  • At idle the engine uses very little fuel, so a small extra source, like an EVAP purge valve stuck open or a dripping injector, makes a big difference.
  • It is usually safe to drive for a few days, but a strong fuel smell, black smoke, stalling or a flashing light means get it checked now.
  • On some 2012–2014 Kia Rio and Soul and 2012–2013 Land Rover LR2 models, the fix is an engine computer software update, not a part.

What P2188 means

Your engine is getting more fuel than it needs at idle, and the computer has run out of room to take it away. Scanners call it System Too Rich at Idle (Bank 1). The upstream oxygen sensor reports rich exhaust, the computer cuts fuel through its fuel trim, and when the trim stays at its limit while the engine idles, P2188 sets. Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1; on a four-cylinder that’s the whole engine.

Idle matters because the engine burns very little fuel there. A small extra source of fuel that barely registers at highway speed can be a big share of the total at idle.

Is it safe to drive?

Yes, for a few days in most cases. Many cars with P2188 feel normal or idle a little rough. Book a diagnosis soon anyway: a rich engine thins the oil with fuel, fouls spark plugs and puts extra heat into the catalytic converter. The answer changes if you smell raw fuel, see black smoke, the engine stalls at lights, or the check engine light flashes. Those mean it’s rich enough to misfire or leak fuel, so drive only as far as a shop.

Causes, ranked

CauseHow you confirm itTypical cost (US independent shop, 2026)
EVAP purge valve stuck openTrims return toward normal when the purge hose is pinched; rough start right after refueling$120–$350
Leaking or dripping fuel injectorRich on one bank only on a V engine; injector leak-down or balance test; fuel smell in the oil$250–$600 per injector
Fuel pressure too high (regulator)Gauge reads above spec at idle; fuel in the regulator vacuum line on older engines$150–$450
Dirty or failing mass airflow sensorAirflow reading off at idle; trims change after cleaning$20–$60 to clean; $150–$400 to replace
Coolant temperature sensor reading coldScan shows a cold reading on a warm engine, so the computer adds warm-up fuel$80–$250
Upstream oxygen sensor reading falsely richSensor stays rich while other data says the mixture is fine$150–$400
Engine computer software (some makes)A bulletin for your exact model and year names P2188$100–$200, often $0 under warranty

What to check first

  • Read every code. P2188 with P0172 says bank 1 is rich everywhere; with P0175 or a bank 2 idle code, look for something both banks share, like the purge valve, fuel pressure or the airflow sensor.
  • Check for a bulletin. It costs nothing and on some cars it’s the whole answer.
  • Test the purge valve. With the engine idling, a closed purge valve shouldn’t hold or pass vacuum. Pinching the purge line and watching the trims is the quick shop test.
  • Compare fuel trims at idle and 2,500 rpm. Rich only at idle points to the purge valve or a dripping injector; rich everywhere points to fuel pressure or airflow.
  • Check fuel pressure and the coolant temperature reading before condemning injectors.
  • Clear it and drive. If the code stays off for a week of mixed driving with plenty of idling, the fix worked.

The bulletins point to software. Kia released an engine computer upgrade for some 2012–2014 Rio and 2012–2014 Soul models that set P2188 among other codes, and Land Rover traced P2188 on the 2012–2013 LR2 to an OBD calibration error and issued a bulletin for the 2014 Range Rover Evoque.

What it costs

The cheap outcome is a cleaned airflow sensor at $20–$60 or a software update, often free under warranty. The common outcome is a purge valve at $120–$350. The expensive outcome is a leaking injector, $250–$600 each, or a fuel pressure regulator. A fuel trim check and purge test, part of a $100–$180 diagnosis, keep a shop from replacing an oxygen sensor that was only reporting the truth.

P2188 is the opposite of P2187, lean at idle. It often shows with P0172, and sometimes with P2178, the same rich condition off idle. If the airflow sensor is at fault you may also see P0101. 2 complaints filed with NHTSA mention P2188; those are owner reports, not confirmed causes. More on what the light means: check engine light on.

What owners report to NHTSA

2 complaints filed with NHTSA mention P2188, 2 of them since 2015, across 2 different models. The component owners most often filed it under: engine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with P2188?

Usually for a few days, yes. Most cars idle a little rough or feel normal. Book a diagnosis soon, because extra fuel washes oil off the cylinder walls and can overheat the catalytic converter over time. If you smell raw fuel, see black smoke, or the light flashes, drive only to a shop.

What is the most common cause of P2188?

An EVAP purge valve that sticks open is the one we check first. At idle it pulls fuel vapor from the charcoal canister straight into the engine, and at idle that vapor is a big share of the total fuel. A leaking injector or fuel pressure that's too high come next.

What's the difference between P2188 and P0172?

Both mean bank 1 is rich. P2188 sets only at idle; P0172 is judged across all driving. Rich only at idle points toward the purge valve or a dripping injector, while rich everywhere points more toward the airflow sensor or fuel pressure.

Can a bad O2 sensor cause P2188?

It can, but it's not the usual answer. A front oxygen sensor that reads falsely rich makes the computer pull fuel for no reason. A shop checks that by looking at the sensor, the fuel trims and the exhaust together before replacing it.
