P2101: Throttle Actuator A Control Motor Circuit Range/Performance

Key takeaways

  • P2101 means the motor that opens the electronic throttle isn't reaching the position the computer asks for, or its current is out of range.
  • It usually triggers reduced-power (limp) mode, which limits speed, so drive short trips only and stay off the highway.
  • Check the throttle body connector and clean carbon from the throttle plate before replacing anything; cleaning and a relearn run $80–$200.
  • If the motor or gears inside have failed, the fix is a new electronic throttle body at $300–$700.
  • Honda, Acura, Ford and GM have bulletins on P2101 for recent models, including software for 2017–2019 Silverado and Sierra trucks.

What P2101 means

The computer tells the electronic throttle to open to a certain point, and the throttle isn’t getting there. Scanners call it “Throttle Actuator A Control Motor Circuit Range/Performance.” On a drive-by-wire engine there’s no cable from the pedal: a small electric motor in the throttle body turns the plate, and two position sensors report where it ended up. The computer watches the gap between commanded and actual position, and the current the motor draws. When the error or the current stays out of range, P2101 sets.

Is it safe to drive?

Short trips only. Almost every car goes into reduced-power (limp) mode with P2101. The throttle is held near a fixed small opening, acceleration is weak, and speed is limited. You can usually get to a nearby shop. Don’t take it on the highway, because you may not be able to merge or keep up.

The symptom that changes the answer: the engine surges on its own, the idle hangs high, or it stalls. Then have it towed.

Causes, ranked

CauseHow you confirm itTypical cost (US independent shop, 2026)
Carbon buildup or ice binding the throttle plateCarbon ring behind the plate; plate feels sticky with the engine off and key out$80–$200 clean + relearn

What to check first

  • Read all codes. P2101 with P2111, P2112 or P2119 points to a sticking plate or failing motor; with voltage codes, test the battery first.
  • Clean the throttle body with the key out, then run the relearn for your make. Don’t push a drive-by-wire plate open with the key on.
  • Reseat and inspect the connector for corrosion and loose pins.
  • Test the battery and charging system. It’s cheap and rules out a common false lead.
  • Check for bulletins before buying a throttle body.

The bulletin pattern is mostly software and investigation, not a known bad part. GM has an ECM reprogramming to correct P2101 on 2017–2019 Silverado and Sierra trucks, plus preliminary information on high-mileage 2006–2010 GM vehicles with idle surge and reduced power. Ford has one for 2022–2023 F-150, Expedition and Navigator 3.5L turbo engines with reduced power on startup. Honda and Acura issued dealer messages collecting 2023–2024 Accord and CR-V hybrids and 2023 RDX and TLX with this code, and Mitsubishi corrected its diagnostic procedure for the 2014–2015 Outlander.

What it costs

The cheap outcome is a throttle body cleaning and relearn, $80–$200, or a software update at $100–$200. The common outcome after that is a connector or wiring repair, $100–$250. The expensive outcome is a new electronic throttle body at $300–$700 installed, more on trucks and European cars. A diagnostic hour at $100–$180 that watches commanded versus actual position tells you which one you’re paying for. If you have live data and want a second look, ask our AI mechanic.

P2102 and P2103 are the throttle motor circuit low and high codes, which lean more toward wiring. P2135 (throttle sensors disagree) and P0121 often appear alongside when the plate position is in doubt. If the car stumbles or stalls, see car stalls while driving.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dirty throttle body cause P2101?

Yes. Carbon or ice around the plate makes the motor work harder and lag behind the command, which is exactly what this code watches. Cleaning and a relearn fix a fair share of P2101 cases.

Can a weak battery cause P2101?

It can. The throttle motor needs steady voltage, and low system voltage during cranking or from a failing battery or alternator can set it. Test the battery and charging if other electrical codes appear too.

Can I drive with P2101?

Short trips at low speed, usually. Limp mode holds the throttle to a small opening, so avoid the highway. If the engine won't rev, surges or stalls, have it towed.

Do I need to replace the whole throttle body for P2101?

If the motor or its gears have failed, yes; the motor isn't sold separately for most cars. Wiring, carbon and software come first, and a new throttle body needs a relearn after installation.
