P2004: Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Open (Bank 1)

Key takeaways

  • P2004 means the flaps or valves inside the intake manifold on bank 1 didn't close when commanded, according to their position sensor or the computer's own checks.
  • It's usually safe to drive; expect a little less low-speed pull and maybe a rougher idle, not engine damage.
  • Check the actuator, its vacuum hose or wiring and the linkage before paying for a new manifold.
  • On many engines the runner valves and their position sensor are built into the manifold, which is why the expensive fix can reach $1,500.
  • Bulletins from Nissan, Subaru and Ford point to a failed position sensor, corroded valve shafts, or cracked vacuum hoses.

What P2004 means

The flaps inside your intake manifold are staying open when the computer tells them to close. Scanners call it Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Open (Bank 1). Many engines have runner, tumble or swirl valves in the intake: at low rpm they close to make the incoming air swirl or take a longer path, which helps torque and clean burning, and at high rpm they open. An electric or vacuum actuator moves them, and on most cars a position sensor reports back. If the computer commands them closed but the sensor (or its own airflow checks) says they’re still open, it sets P2004. Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1; four-cylinder engines only have bank 1.

Is it safe to drive?

Yes, in most cases. With the runners stuck open the engine behaves much like one without them: you may notice a little less pull from low speed and a slightly rougher idle, and emissions go up a bit. It won’t hurt the engine on its own. The answer changes if you hear rattling from the intake, the engine starts misfiring, or it hesitates badly. On some engines a flap or screw can break loose and get drawn into a cylinder, so stop and have it looked at.

Causes, ranked

CauseHow you confirm itTypical cost (US independent shop, 2026)
Cracked or disconnected vacuum hose to the actuator (vacuum-operated systems)Actuator rod doesn’t move with the engine running; hose split or off; smoke test finds it$50–$400
Actuator or control valve failedActuator doesn’t move when commanded with a scan tool; no response with good power, ground and vacuum$150–$500
Linkage broken, or valves seized with carbon or corrosionActuator moves but the shaft doesn’t, or the shaft is stiff by hand$150–$500 for linkage; $600–$1,500 if the manifold must be replaced
Position sensor or its wiringSensor reading doesn’t change while the valves visibly move; open or shorted wire$100–$250 for wiring; sensor often requires removing the manifold
Intake manifold with built-in valvesValves or sensor aren’t sold separately for your engine$600–$1,500

What to check first

  • Watch the actuator move. With the engine idling or using a scan tool command, the rod or arm should swing when the valves are commanded. No movement narrows it to the actuator, its vacuum or its wiring.
  • Check the vacuum hose and connector. A split hose or a corroded plug is the cheapest fix and a common one.
  • Check the linkage and shaft. A popped-off link or a shaft that won’t turn by hand means a mechanical fault, not an electrical one.
  • Compare the position sensor reading with what the valves are really doing before condemning the manifold.
  • Clear it and drive. After a hose or connector repair, clear the code and drive; it should stay off.

The bulletins fall into a few patterns. Nissan tells technicians to replace the position sensor on 2013–2017 Altima and 2014–2017 Rogue models, and to replace the intake manifold on 2019–2020 Altimas that set P2004 in weather below 0°F with no other fault found. Ford says to check for cracked intake vacuum hoses on 2017–2019 F-Super Duty 6.2L trucks before replacing the manifold. Subaru changed its turbo Forester and WRX valve shafts to stainless steel after condensation corroded them.

What it costs

The cheap outcome is a vacuum hose or connector, from about $50 up to $400 if it’s under other parts. The common outcome is an actuator or linkage at $150–$500. The expensive outcome is a new intake manifold with the valves built in, $600–$1,500. Watching the actuator during a $100–$180 diagnosis tells a shop which of those you need before any parts are ordered.

P2005 is the same fault on bank 2, and P2006 and P2007 mean stuck closed. Position sensor codes such as P2014 and P2015 often come with P2004. For what else the light might mean, see can I drive with the check engine light on.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with a P2004 code?

Usually yes. With the runners stuck open the engine loses a little low-rpm torque and may idle a bit rougher, but it runs. Stop driving and get it checked if you hear rattling from the intake or get misfire codes, because a broken flap can end up inside the engine.

What does the intake manifold runner control do?

It changes the path or swirl of air going into the cylinders. Closed at low rpm, the flaps make the air tumble or travel a longer path for better torque and cleaner burning; open at high rpm, they let the engine breathe freely. P2004 says they're stuck in the open position.

Do I have to replace the whole intake manifold for P2004?

Not always. On engines with a separate actuator, the actuator, its vacuum hose or its linkage can be replaced alone. On many modern engines the valves and position sensor are built into the manifold, so the manifold comes off either way and is often replaced as a unit.

What's the difference between P2004 and P2005?

Same fault, different side of the engine. P2004 is bank 1, the side with cylinder 1; P2005 is bank 2 on V engines. P2006 and P2007 are the opposite fault: runners stuck closed.
