P0496: EVAP System High Purge Flow
Key takeaways
- P0496 means the engine computer saw vapor flowing from the EVAP system into the engine when the purge valve should have been closed; a purge valve stuck open is the usual cause.
- The car is safe to drive, but a stuck-open purge valve can cause hard starting or stalling right after you fill the tank.
- Several manufacturers have software updates for this code, so check for a bulletin before replacing parts on a newer car.
- A purge valve at a US independent shop usually runs $120–$350; a charcoal canister, if it's also damaged, is $300–$800.
What P0496 means
Fuel vapor from your tank is being sucked into the engine at a time when the valve controlling it should be shut.
Scanners call it Evaporative Emission System High Purge Flow (sometimes “EVAP System High Purge Flow”). The EVAP system stores fuel vapor in a charcoal canister, and a purge valve lets engine vacuum draw that vapor in to be burned. During its self-test, the engine computer closes the vent side and watches the fuel tank pressure sensor. If vacuum builds in the tank when the purge valve is commanded closed, or builds faster than expected, it sets P0496. In plain terms: the purge valve is leaking through, or something is making it look that way.
Is it safe to drive?
Yes. The car runs, and most drivers only notice the light. P0496 is an emissions fault, and the car will fail an emissions or plug-in inspection until it’s fixed.
What changes the answer: hard starting or stalling right after refueling, or a rough idle that makes the engine die at stops. That’s still usually a purge valve problem, but a car that stalls in traffic isn’t safe to rely on. Get it fixed soon. A strong raw-fuel smell or a visible leak is a different problem; park it.
Causes, ranked
| Cause | How you confirm it | Typical cost (US independent shop, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Purge valve stuck open or leaking through | With the engine idling and the valve unplugged, vacuum still pulls through it; hard start after refueling | $120–$350 |
| Software calibration on specific models | A manufacturer bulletin matches your car and code | Often $0 under warranty; $100–$200 otherwise |
| Purge valve wiring or connector | Valve stays on because of a shorted control wire; damaged connector | $100–$250 |
| Kinked vent line or blocked vent valve | Slow filling; tank pressure goes deep into vacuum during the test | $100–$350 |
| Charcoal canister damaged or saturated, charcoal in the lines | Black grains in the purge valve or hoses; history of topping off | $300–$800 |
What to check first
- Note when the symptoms happen. Hard start only after fueling is a strong sign of a purge valve stuck open.
- Test the purge valve. Unplugged, a normally closed purge valve shouldn’t pass air or vacuum. A shop can also command it on and off with a scan tool while watching tank pressure.
- Check for a bulletin. The pattern here is strong. Ford has many bulletins covering 2018–2024 models, including a PCM reprogram for the 2023–2024 Escape 1.5L, a connector check on 2020–2022 Explorer and Aviator, a kinked vent line on 2017–2021 Transit, and a 2024 Edge bulletin that describes hard starts and stalls after refueling. Jaguar and Land Rover bulletins for 2017–2020 models cover a software fault that sets P0496 when the car is refueled within seconds of shutting off. Volkswagen also has an engine computer update that addresses it.
- Look for charcoal. If you replace the valve, look inside the lines. Charcoal grains mean the canister is breaking down and will ruin the new valve.
- Clear it and drive. EVAP tests need several drive cycles, often with the tank between a quarter and three-quarters full. If the light stays off for a week, the repair worked.

What it costs
The cheap outcome is a software update or a connector repair, from free under warranty to $100–$250. The common outcome is a purge valve at $120–$350. The expensive outcome is a charcoal canister at $300–$800, when charcoal has broken loose or fuel has soaked it. A quick purge valve test and a bulletin check before ordering parts are the cheapest diagnosis you’ll get for an EVAP code. If you want help reading the results, ask our AI mechanic.
Related codes
P0441 (incorrect purge flow) and P0497 (low purge flow) are the same valve seen from the other side. A purge valve that leaks at idle can also cause a lean code like P0171 and rough idle. With P0455 or P0451 on the same scan, look for a shared vent, connector or software cause. Frequently asked questions
Why is my car hard to start after getting gas?
With a purge valve stuck open, fresh fuel vapor from the tank flows straight into the intake while you refuel and restart. The engine gets far too rich and struggles to fire, or starts and stalls. It's one of the most typical signs of P0496 and of purge valve problems generally.
Can I clean a purge valve instead of replacing it?
Sometimes a valve stuck by debris frees up, but charcoal grains from the canister usually get back in. On most cars the valve is cheap enough that replacing it is the better repair. If you find charcoal in the valve or lines, the canister needs a look too.
Will P0496 hurt my engine?
Not usually. It can cause rough idle, a lean or rich condition and poor starts after fueling. Left for a long time, extra vapor can make fuel trims swing, so fix it, but it's not urgent the way a flashing check engine light is.
Does topping off the tank cause P0496?
It can contribute. Topping off after the pump clicks can push liquid fuel into the charcoal canister, which saturates it and can damage the purge valve. Stop at the first click.
