P0089: Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 Performance
Key takeaways
- P0089 means the fuel pressure the engine computer measures doesn't follow the pressure it's asking the regulator for.
- Drive only short, gentle trips; if the engine stalls, dies under load or you smell raw fuel, have it towed.
- A bad fuel rail pressure sensor sets P0089 with nothing wrong with the fuel system, so it gets checked before any pump.
- 33 complaints filed with NHTSA mention P0089, 12 of them from Chevrolet Equinox owners.
- Fixes run from about $80 for a fuel filter to about $1,800 for a high-pressure pump.
What P0089 means
The fuel pressure in your engine isn’t doing what the computer tells it to. Scanners call it Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 Performance. The computer commands a target pressure through a regulator or control valve, then reads the fuel rail pressure sensor to see if it got there. When the reading keeps missing the target, too high, too low or swinging, it sets P0089.
What “regulator” means depends on the engine. On a direct-injection gas engine it’s usually a solenoid valve built into the camshaft-driven high-pressure pump. On a common-rail diesel it’s a pressure control valve on the pump or the rail. On many port-injected cars the in-tank pump module does the regulating.
Is it safe to drive?
Short trips only. Pressure that won’t hold steady can make the engine hesitate, stumble when you accelerate, or drop into reduced power. With a steady light and an engine that runs normally, drive gently to a shop. The symptom that changes the answer is stalling: if the engine dies at idle, dies when you pull into traffic, or cranks but won’t restart, have it towed. If you smell raw fuel, don’t drive it at all.
Causes, ranked
| Cause | How you confirm it | Typical cost (US independent shop, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Faulty fuel rail pressure sensor | Reading doesn’t match a mechanical gauge or is implausible at rest; check for a bulletin | $150–$400 |
| Wiring or connector at the regulator valve or sensor | Corroded pins, chafed wires; voltage and resistance tests at the plug | $100–$250 |
| Low supply from the tank side (clogged filter, weak in-tank pump) | Low-side pressure and volume test comes up short, often with P008A | $80–$250 filter; $500–$1,200 in-tank pump |
| High-pressure pump or its built-in control valve (direct injection, diesel) | Low side good, but rail pressure won’t follow commanded on scan data | $600–$1,800 |
| Separate fuel pressure regulator (return-style port injection, some diesels) | Pressure doesn’t change as commanded; fuel in the vacuum line on older cars | $150–$450 |
| Engine software | A bulletin covers your make, model and year | $100–$200; often $0 under a bulletin |
What to check first
- Read all the codes and the freeze frame. P0089 with P0087 or P008A points to supply; with sensor codes like P0191 it points to the sensor or its wiring.
- Look for a bulletin. The pattern is clear. GM tells technicians on 2014–2016 Sierra, Yukon and Corvette models to replace the fuel rail pressure sensor if normal diagnosis finds nothing, and a 2024 Silverado and Sierra 1500 note says to replace the fuel rail, not the pump, for P0089 with P2293. Mazda has a software fix for the 2021 Mazda2, and Land Rover has several bulletins for LR2, Evoque, LR4 and Range Rover models.
- Compare commanded and actual pressure on live data at idle and under load.
- Confirm the sensor against a mechanical gauge before replacing any pump.
- Test the low side before the high side. Tank pump pressure, volume and wiring come first because they feed everything downstream.
NHTSA data puts GM’s small SUVs on top: 33 complaints filed with NHTSA mention P0089, 12 from Chevrolet Equinox owners and 5 from GMC Terrain owners. Those are owner reports, not confirmed causes.
What it costs
The cheap outcome is a fuel filter, a wiring repair or a software update, about $80–$250. The common outcome is a fuel rail pressure sensor at $150–$400 or an in-tank pump at $500–$1,200. The expensive outcome is a high-pressure pump on a direct-injection engine, up to about $1,800. A pressure test and a bulletin check cost far less than a guessed pump. Related codes
P0089 sits in a family with P0087 (pressure too low), P0088 (too high) and P008A (low-pressure side too low). It often appears with P2293 or lean code P0171. If the engine sputters or stalls while driving, fuel pressure is one of the first things to rule out.
What owners report to NHTSA
33 complaints filed with NHTSA mention P0089, 31 of them since 2015, across 15 different models. The component owners most often filed it under: engine.

Manufacturer service bulletins that name P0089
30 technical service bulletins and manufacturer communications filed with NHTSA mention P0089, from 6 makes. A bulletin means the manufacturer has documented a known cause or a fix procedure for that model. Examples:

Frequently asked questions
Is P0089 the fuel pump?
Sometimes, but not first. On direct-injection engines the pressure regulator is usually a control valve built into the high-pressure pump, so a failed valve means a pump. A faulty pressure sensor, a wiring fault or weak supply from the tank causes the same code, and those are cheaper to rule out.
Can I drive with P0089?
Short, gentle trips to a shop are usually fine if the engine runs normally. Many cars drop into reduced power. If it stalls, hesitates hard when you pull into traffic, or you smell fuel, have it towed.
What's the difference between P0087, P0088 and P0089?
P0087 means pressure stayed too low and P0088 means it went too high. P0089 means the pressure doesn't track what the regulator is commanded to do, which can go either way or swing back and forth.
Can P0089 be a false code?
Yes. Mazda released engine software for the 2021 Mazda2 because the computer flagged P0089 with normal fuel pressure, and Land Rover traced some LR2 and Evoque cases to a relief valve seal inside the tank pump. A shop checks for a bulletin before buying parts.
