P0012: Intake Camshaft Position Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)

Severity: MediumDrive it? Short trips onlyTypical cost: $50–$3,00044 NHTSA complaints · 22 bulletinsPowertrain (generic, all makes)

Key takeaways

  • P0012 means the engine computer asked the bank 1 intake camshaft to move back (retard) and it ended up further back than commanded, or didn't come back out.
  • Variable valve timing runs on engine oil pressure, so low oil, the wrong viscosity or sludge is the first thing to check and the cheapest fix.
  • The usual parts answer is the oil control (VVT) solenoid at $150–$450; a cam phaser or a stretched timing chain is the expensive end at $800–$3,000.
  • Ford bulletins for many 2015–2021 Ford and Lincoln models say debris can stick the VCT solenoid and tell technicians to cycle it before replacing anything.
  • Mazda bulletins for several 2014–2020 Mazda3, Mazda6 and CX-5 models fix P0012 with engine computer software, and one covers a VVT actuator spring shaft.

What P0012 means

The intake camshaft on one side of your engine is sitting later in its timing than the computer told it to. The scanner name is Intake Camshaft Position Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1). On engines with variable valve timing, the computer uses an oil control solenoid to send oil pressure to a phaser on the end of the camshaft, which rotates the cam a few degrees ahead of or behind the crankshaft. It compares the camshaft position sensor against the crankshaft sensor, and when the cam stays further retarded than commanded for long enough, it sets P0012. “Bank 1” is the side with cylinder 1; four-cylinder engines only have bank 1.

Is it safe to drive?

Short trips, to get it checked. Most cars with P0012 still run, but with less power, worse fuel economy, and sometimes a rough idle or a stall when you come to a stop. The bigger reason not to put it off is that the most common causes involve oil: if the engine is low on oil, or the timing chain is stretching, driving on it makes the repair bigger. What changes the answer: an oil pressure warning light, a loud rattle or knock from the front of the engine that doesn’t go away after a few seconds, or stalling in traffic. Any of those, park it and check the oil before you go further.

Causes, ranked

CauseHow you confirm itTypical cost (US independent shop, 2026)
Low oil, wrong viscosity or overdue oil changeDipstick low or dark and thick; code appeared after an oil change or a long interval$50–$120
Oil control (VVT) solenoid stickingScan tool command doesn’t move the cam; debris on the solenoid screen; resistance out of spec$150–$450
Wiring or connector at the solenoidOpen or high resistance in the solenoid circuit; oil wicked into the connector$100–$250
Engine computer software (some makes)A bulletin for your exact model and year names P0012$100–$200, or free under warranty
Cam phaser worn or stuckSolenoid tests good but the cam still won’t follow commands; rattle on cold start$800–$2,000
Stretched timing chain or jumped toothCam/crank correlation codes too (P0016); rattle; chain stretch reading on the scan tool$1,200–$3,000

What to check first

  • Check the oil level and condition on level ground with the engine off. Top it up or change it with the exact viscosity on the oil cap, then clear the code and drive.
  • Read freeze frame and any companion codes. P0012 alone points at the solenoid or oil; P0012 with P0016 or the bank 2 twin P0022 points further toward the chain.
  • Command the solenoid with a scan tool and watch actual versus desired cam angle. If the cam doesn’t move, pull the solenoid and look at its screen for sludge or debris.
  • Check the solenoid’s resistance and wiring before buying the part.
  • Look up bulletins for your car. Ford and Lincoln bulletins covering many 2015–2021 models say small debris can stick the VCT solenoid and tell technicians to cycle it several times before replacing it. Mazda bulletins for several 2014–2020 Mazda3, Mazda6 and CX-5 models fix false P0012 codes with a software update, and one older Mazda bulletin covers a VVT actuator spring shaft.
  • Only then look at the phaser and chain. That is a bigger teardown, and it’s where a second opinion pays off.

What it costs

The cheap outcome is an oil change or top-up with the right oil, $50–$120, and the code doesn’t come back. The common outcome is a VVT solenoid at $150–$450. The expensive outcome is a cam phaser at $800–$2,000 or a timing chain job at $1,200–$3,000, which is why a $100–$180 diagnosis that actually commands the solenoid is worth paying for before anyone opens the engine. If you want a second read on the freeze frame before you book, ask the mechanic chat.

P0012 often shows up with P0011 (same cam, over-advanced or off target), the solenoid circuit code P0010, the exhaust cam code P0014, or the bank 2 versions P0021 and P0022. Several codes at once, on both banks, points toward oil or the timing chain rather than one solenoid. For more on what the light itself means, see check engine light on.

Frequently asked questions

Can low or wrong oil cause P0012?

Yes, and it's the first thing to rule out. The cam phaser is moved by oil pressure, so an engine a quart or two low, oil thicker or thinner than the cap says, or sludge in the screen can leave the cam stuck retarded. Check the dipstick on level ground before paying for anything.

Is P0012 serious?

It's not an emergency on its own, but it isn't one to ignore. The engine loses power and economy, may idle rough or stall, and if the cause is low oil or a stretched timing chain, the damage gets more expensive the longer it runs.

How much does it cost to fix P0012?

An oil change with the right oil is $50–$120. A VVT solenoid is usually $150–$450. A cam phaser runs $800–$2,000, and a timing chain job $1,200–$3,000 at an independent shop. Diagnosis first, $100–$180, keeps you from buying the wrong one.

What's the difference between P0011 and P0012?

Both are about the bank 1 intake cam. P0011 means its timing is off from what was commanded in general or too far advanced; P0012 means it's stuck too far retarded. The checks are the same: oil, solenoid, phaser, chain.

Will clearing P0012 fix it?

Only if the cause was a one-off, like an oil change with the wrong oil that has since been corrected. If the solenoid, phaser or chain is at fault, the code comes back within a few drives.
